Four pretty distinct films on their ways out of town after Thursday's final shows. They include "Magic Mike," Steven Soderbergh's shadowy look at the world of male strippers; "The Ambassador," a curious documentary about the African diamond trade; "2 Days in New York," a charming little domestic comedy directed by and starring Julie Delpy; and "Red Hook Summer," Spike Lee's lastest visit to a Brooklyn neighborhood.

You could make a couple of thoughtful double-features out of the films that are departing local theaters after Thursday night -- which, conveniently, gives you enough time to do just that.  The titles to catch up with are "Ai WeiWei: Never Sorry," a documentary about the Chinese activist and artist; "Oslo, August 31," an intelligent drama about a recovering drug addict revisiting his old life; "Cosmopolis," David Cronenberg's ambitious adaptation of a Don DeLillo novel about a financier with his life in ruins; and "360," a multi-character drama starring Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, and Anthony Hopkins.

Two of the summer's most delightful little comedies are getting out of town before the Labor Day rush:  "Bernie," Richard Linklater's lightly morbid tale of a real-life murder starring Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine, and "Your Sister's Sister," Lynn Shelton's tale of a muddled man finding himself romantically caught between two half-sisters, starring Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt.

Three international films worth catching are on their way out of town come late Thursday night:  the Oscar-nominated animated feature "A Cat in Paris"; the Danish rude boy comedy "Klown"; and the Spanish alien invasion comedy "Extraterrestrial."  Also departing is the quite awful "Red Lights," which was made in Spain and stars Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver.  So if you can only see three of these, well....

Not very much turnover at local movie theaters this week.  Only one of the films we've recently reviewed is on its way out of town:  "Neil Young Journeys," Jonathan Demme's third documentary/concert film featuring the great Canadian rocker on a journey to his Ontario home town and in concert at Toronto's Massey Hall.  It's final show is Thursday night.

I'm not sure if you could find a more distinct pair of films than this week's class of soon-to-be-gone movies:  Jean Renoir's immortal 1937 World War I drama "Grand Illusion" and the Duplass brothers' pleasantly goofy sibling rivalry comedy "The Do-Deca-Pentathalon."  Both are worth leaving the house to see, though:  they have that in common.

One of the very best films I've seen in 2012 has only a few showings left in its Portland life:  "The Deep Blue Sea," director Terrence Davies' lyrical, poignant and transporting film about the cost a woman pays for an affair of the heart.  It's truly a must-see.  Also departing, "Hysteria," a film about the invention of the vibrator, which my colleague Marc Mohan found didn't provide much of a buzz.

Two films leaving town this week desrving of attention, especially considering the fact that they only just got here:  "This Is Not a Film," a clever and painful documentary by Iranian director Jafar Panahi about life under house arrest and the threat of censorship; and "Polisse," a French drama about the professional and private lives of a squad of child protection officers in a rough part of Paris.  Both worth a look.

The busy spring cleaning of local moviehouses continues this week, with a number of notable titles on their way out of Portland-area theaters after Thursday's final shows.  These include the Italian papal comedy "We Have a Pope"; Morgan Spurlock's male grooming documentary "Mansome"; the tale of a creepy religious cult "Sound of My Voice"; and two maligned film: the raunch-comedy sequel "American Reunion" and the shaggy dog (literally, in this case) marital comedy/drama "Darling Companion."

For some reason, we've got one of the busiest movie weeks of the year about to hit Portland:  almost 20 feature films and 8 new or continuing festivals or special events.  So it's no wonder that the local movie screens need to get out the broom and sweep clean.  Thing is, they're sweeping out some very good films in the process.  Wednesday and Thursday mark your last chances to see the well-worthwhile "Bully," "Damsels in Distress," "The Kid with a Bike," "Marley" and "The Salt of Life," as well as the locally-made indie "Blue Like Jazz" and the action film "Safe House."  Choose accordingly and get watching!

Two of the absolute must-see films of the year are in their final two days in Portland-area theaters, so consider yourselves warned.  "The Raid: Redemption" is a stunning, pedal-to-the-floor action film from Indonesia.  "We Need to Talk About Kevin" is a blistering and artful drama about a mother dealing with her son's horrible misdeeds.  Two other films -- the Navy SEAL shoot-em-up "Act of Valor" and the New Zealand coming-of-age story "Boy" -- are also leaving, but "Raid" and "Kevin" are BY FAR the priorities.  DO NOT MISS THEM.

Another Wednesday, another batch of worthwhile films packing their bags to leave town.  Today and tomorrow mark your final chances to see the following films on the big screen in Portland-area theaters:  "Undefeated," the superb Oscar-winning documentary about a Memphis, Tennesse, high school football team; "Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope," Morgan Spurlock's charming look at the annual assembly of freaks and geeks in San Diego; "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia," a haunting police drama from Turkey; and "We Bought a Zoo," Cameron Crowe's sweet and sentimental story of a family living through tragedy in unique fashion.
